DC Housing 101

“We have an affordable housing crisis in DC.”

We hear that a lot. But what does it actually mean? What is “affordable” housing? What makes the situation a crisis? What does that mean for you and me?

Join Just Homes for our popular DC Housing 101 presentation, where we answer these questions and more. In this virtual conversation, we’ll unpack the nature of the housing challenges we face in DC and explore the ways the faith community can address those challenges.

This session is an introduction to the topic of housing justice in DC, designed to be a starting point for those looking to understand the issues and get involved.

You can sign up to join the conversation here. We look forward to learning alongside you!

If you have any questions, please contact Shiri Yadlin, the Director of Just Homes at shiri@districtchurch.org.

Faith & Money Workshop

What is your relationship to money? Do you love it? Hate it? Do you abuse it? Ignore it? What does the Bible say about money? What does our culture say? How does your Church handle money and resources? How does your relationship to money influence the justice issues you care about in the community?

Join Just Homes for a workshop on faith, money, and financial stewardship presented by our partners at Faith & Money Network. Through fun exercises, small group discussions and stories, we will talk freely and openly about our relationship with money and how it affects our personal lives, our families, our church, and our world.

This workshop will be held on Saturday August 21st from 10am-1pm virtually, via Zoom. You will receive the link upon registration.

You can register by clicking here.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Panel Discussion: Gentrification & Displacement

Join Just Homes and community partners for an open and honest panel conversation about gentrification, displacement, and community-building.

Together we will explore the topic of gentrification from a personal angle, seeking to understand how long-time Washington residents have experienced neighborhood change and displacement. What do these stories mean for our efforts to think, act, and love like Jesus? How can all DC residents fight against displacement?

During this conversation, we will hear from native Washingtonians and advocates working against displacement and in pursuit of equitable community development. We will cultivate principles for conscious neighboring and discern how we can all live as justice-minded residents of our communities.

This conversation will be held virtually from 7:00-8:15 PM on Monday July 12th. RSVP to join us today!

Housing Justice Discipleship Program Kick-Off

HJD KO Horizontal Promo.png

Are you passionate about the vision of a just city where everyone has a home? Do you want to learn what role you can play in pursuing that vision? The Housing Justice Discipleship Program (HJD) is a new opportunity from Just Homes designed to build the capacity of Christians in the DC area to pursue and embody justice, specifically housing justice.

Why participate in HJD?

Participants will build community with fellow Christians while receiving practical training on how to pursue housing justice. Through a series of skills-based workshops and small group conversations, you’ll become prepared to advocate for expansion of housing justice alongside a community of like-minded peers.

What is involved in the program?

A series of skills-based workshop trainings, with topics including Advocacy 101, Caring for Unhoused Neighbors, and Investing in Housing Justice. These workshops will take place every 4-6 weeks, spanning from March 2021 through July 2021. These workshops will be held virtually on weekday evenings, so you can participate from anywhere!

Participants will also be placed in small groups of 5-7 people, who will connect with one another between workshops to process what they’re learning and engage in action together. These groups will be led by facilitators from Just Homes and include both intentional conversation for further learning and community building. Each group will choose their own schedule.

To learn more about this program and what participation looks like, join us for this Virtual Kick Off Event on Tuesday March 9th at 7:00 PM.

Just Homes Vision Night

Join us for an evening of celebrating the work churches across the city already do to meet housing needs, and a conversation about how the Church in D.C. can be more involved in closing the gap between availability of and need for justice housing.

The evening will feature a small interactive exhibit outlining housing challenges in D.C., speakers from our community, and conversations alongside fellow D.C. residents. We will hear from churches already hard at work serving in the housing space, share the Just Homes strategy of engagement, and collaboratively brainstorm how our faith communities can come together to realize the vision of a just city where everyone has a home.

We have much to learn from each other as we consider the following: How is God calling our churches to act to close the housing gap in the city? How is God calling us as individuals to act?

If you or your church community are already involved in housing work, or are interested in exploring the idea of housing as a justice issue and how you can use your resources to meet these needs in your community, please join us!
